Vic: Melbourne to host Pacific School Games
MELBOURNE, April 19 AAP - More than 3,500 students will test Melbourne's CommonwealthGames facilities at the 2005 Pacific School Games.
Victorian Premier Steve Bracks today announced the state would stage the games at acost of $3 million.
Melbourne nudged out Sydney to win the right to host the nine-day sporting event, whichattracts students from 30 Pacific countries.
The $3 million allocation to the student games is part of an $8 million school sportingpackage announced by Mr Bracks today.
The remainder of the funding, to be allocated in next month's state Budget, will allowstate schools to buy sporting equipment.
"The $5 million allocation for sporting equipment represents a doubling of most schools'annual sport equipment budgets and will inspire more students to take up sport and becomephysically active," Mr Bracks said, after announcing the funding boost at Dinjerra PrimarySchool in suburban Braybrook.
At the function, Mr Bracks also revealed the state government was close to achievingits election promise of smaller class sizes for prep and grades one and two.
He said state schools now had an average class size of 21.8 pupils for those years,compared to the promised target of 21.
Melbourne will host the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
