Freihofer's Run for Women, which on May28 will serve for the fifth consecutive year as the 10,000-meter national championship, has been denied that status for 1989 and instead has been awarded the 5,000-meter championship race.
The Freihofer run, a 10,000-meter road race that starts and finishes at the Empire State Plaza and annually attracts many of the best women's runners in the country, was first designated a national championship in 1984 and won five subsequent annual bids to retain that position.
