Fed: Warwick Parer quits parliament
Former HOWARD government frontbencher WARWICK PARER has announced that he's quitting
federal politics.
The move will spark a Liberal pre-selection battle for his Queensland Senate seat.
A close friend of Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD, the former Resources Minister was at
the centre of controversy in 1996.
He was accused of a conflict of interest after it was revealed that his family trust
held shares in Queensland mining companies which came under his portfolio.
Mr HOWARD refused to dump Senator PARER, who declined to return to the front bench
after the 1998 federal election.
Senator PARER says that after 16 years in the Senate he wants to spend more time with
his family in retirement.
The 63-year-old says his wife and he now have 18 grandchildren, and he's looking forward
to spending some quality time with them.
